FREE THINGS TO DO IN ATHENS

Anafiotika

Anafiotika is a true hidden gem that transports visitors to the idyllic charm of the famous Greek island villages.

Filled with white tiny houses, narrow alleyways, and vibrant flowers falling down its stone walls, this charismatic neighbourhood is like a magical portal transporting you away from the vibrant bustling city just beyond its borders.

The neighbourhood was built in the mid-19th century by craftsmen from Anafi Island and has somehow remained unknown to the majority of tourists visiting Athens. It is undoubtedly one of our favourite places in the city and it offers one of the best panoramic views over the city (sunsets are particularly beautiful here as the golden light brings a magical atmosphere to the neighbourhood).

For us, this tranquil haven is an essential stop for any traveler visiting Athens. And the best part? It’s free - as everything else on this post!

National Gardens

Are you a sucker for tranquility and serenity? Then the National Gardens is the place you need to enjoy some down time.

This massive park will ignite all your senses as you explore its corners - vibrant colours and unique fragrances from its endless flowers and the enchanting sounds from all the bird species inhabiting this oasis.

We just decided to disconnect from the rushing city and to get lost in the multiple paths leading to hidden peaceful corners, where we could enjoy each other’s company and contemplate the beauty of nature right in the heart of Athens!

Plaka Stairs

Located in the neighbourhood of Plaka, these stone steps are the perfect place for you to start exploring the vibrant soul of Athens.

As you ascend the stairs, allow yourself to absorb your surroundings. The blend of traditional taverns, boutique shops and joyful traditional houses adorned with colourful flowers is so unique and mesmerising.

The character and atmosphere of the Plaka Stairs make them an inviting and captivating experience for travellers seeking to explore the heart and soul of Athens.

The stairs are nestled right beneath the Acropolis and it is a must visit for any traveler looking for an authentic, immersive experience in Athens. If you enjoy people gazing as much as we do (welcome to the Weirdo’s gang), simply take a seat, grab a coffee and have fun!

Hadrian’s Arch

Hadrian's Arch is another testament to the architectural grandeur of ancient Greece - and trust us,  there are many in the city!

Built in 131 AD, this magnificent arch welcomes visitors into the heart of the city, making it hard to ignore the importance and magnitude of Greek cultural significance. Framed by the Arch, the Acropolis lays majestically in the distance - in our opinion, one of the most beautiful views of the Acropolis from afar.

Monastiraki Flea Market

Right at the heart of Athens, the Monastiraki flea market offers a vibrant and unique shopping experience. You can pretty much find everything you can think of at the market, from antique furniture and vintage clothing to traditional handicrafts and local DELICIOUS treats. As any flea market, bargaining with friendly merchants is part of the Monastiraki experience, just make sure you are respectful at all times.

It is also one of the best places to buy souvenirs for your family and friends back home!

Philopappos Hill

Near the (one and only) Acropolis, Philopappos Hill stands as one of the best spots for a perfect  photo with the Acropolis in the background.

At the top of hill you can find Philopappos Monument, dedicated to a former Roman senator. To be honest with you, we found the views and the natural surroundings more interesting than the monument itself. We took a few drinks with us and we simply enjoyed some quality time together contemplating the amazing views over the Acropolis.

To reach this true sanctuary of serenity, be mindful: you will need to climb to the top of a hill so make sure you have water and appropriate footwear - we are the WORST hikers ever! Philopappos Hill is well known for being one of the best places to enjoy the sunset in Athens. We haven’t experience that as we chose Mount Lycabettus instead and we couldn’t recommend it more.

Lycabettus Hill

Away from the hustle of Athens lies Lycabettus Hill, a true gem of the city. Rising gracefully from the heart of the city, it offers a special escape from the chaos below.

It provides a 277m high panoramic view that stretches across the city and beyond, allowing visitors to capture the beauty of Athens in a single glance. Let’s be honest, the journey to the top was an adventure on its own but the views made us forget about it - Rui almost died! If you have reduced mobility or simply prefer an easier way to get there, you can use the cable car at least for the journey upwards. with a choice of a leisurely walk or a thrilling funicular ride.

Lycabettus Hill is not a scenic spot! As you ascend to its top, the air becomes fresher and the noise of the city fades away and turns into silence… be ready for some peace of mind. As you can imagine, the sunset is absolutely stunning and that on its own attracts a lot of attention from locals and tourists alike, but the energy and atmosphere was super peaceful despite the amount of people there.
